New OB/GYN physician in Knox, La Porte advocates for women's health

8/31/2015 (Knox, La Port, IN) - Ashley Kirkwood, MD, decided to go into women's care because she found caring for women of all ages and delivering babies to be "magical." It's that sentiment that keeps her focused on being a strong health advocate for adolescents and women.
"While I was in medical school, I did a rotation in labor and delivery and it was absolutely magical. With obstetrics and gynecology, every day is different, and definitely exciting. I'm looking forward to taking the time to relate to my patients, help them start new lives, and give them support to live healthy at any age," Kirkwood said.
Kirkwood completed her undergraduate bachelor of science with honors at University of Western Ontario, Canada. She obtained her medical degree at St. George's University, Grenada, West Indies, and completed residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Newark Beth Israel - Jersey City Program at the Jersey City Medical Center. She finished there as chief resident. Kirkwood is also a junior fellow with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
As she starts her practice in Knox and La Porte, Kirkwood said she looks forward to being an advocate for her patients. "It's very important to me that the women I see truly understand all their treatment options, and that they have a physician who will help them understand the facts. Today, it's very easy to Google matters of healthcare, or get caught up in the latest social media posts that might not always represent true, evidence-based medicine. No matter what stage of life a woman is in, she should always have a trusted provider who will first listen to her,a dn then help develop a plan of health that they can work together. I look forward to being that provider for my patients," Kirkwood said.
She particularly enjoys taking care of teenagers and expecting moms, and enjoys helping her patients navigate and make good choices about contraception, family planning, and safe pregnancies. Kirkwood also takes a special interest in female pelvic reconstructive surgery.
When she is not seeing patients, Kirkwood, who lives in La Porte, enjoys spending time with her new golden retriever puppy, Henry, as well as spending time with friends, reading whatever she can get her hands on, relaxing, and watching movies. She grew up around horses and enjoys competitive riding as well.
Kirkwood is now accepting patients at her Knox and La Porte offices. To schedule an appointment, call 574.772.7918 or 219.326.5700.
