Northwest Health Announces Recipients of Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing
12/14/2020
Northwest Health has named recipients of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This international recognition program was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. In late 1999, Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking those professionals for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.
Patients, families and employees are able to nominate nurses from any Northwest Health hospital, urgent care, occupational medicine clinic or Northwest Health Medical Group office for The DAISY Award. Recipients of this honor receive an "Extraordinary Nurse" commendation, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved sculpture called "A Healer's Touch," created by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
Northwest Health is pleased to share the stories of two compassionate and dedicated professionals who are the organization’s most recent DAISY Award recipients:
Patricia (Patti) Martin, RN
Northwest Health – Porter
Patti Marin, RN is the Manager of the Infusion Center at Northwest Health – Porter. She was nominated by a patient who wrote:
“It is difficult to find words to express my gratitude for line nurse Patti Martin at Northwest Health - Porter. She was my first nurse when I began cancer treatment in summer 2019. She took my first blood draw for labs and accessed my port-a-catheter the first time. I was anxious about my first port access.
Patti's steady hands and gentle approach made the access absolutely painless along with every time since the first visit. She also stayed with me to fill my chemo therapy drug bags the first time.
Her instructions and advice were so valuable. She spent a lot of time going over doctor's procedures and covered many things the doctor doesn't always have time to mention. Her loving and considerate manner put me at ease and provided a wonderful foundation for my first cancer treatment visit.
Patti is a true champion and my personal hero. She will forever have my admiration and appreciation.”
Katrina Richmond, RN
Northwest Health – La Porte
Katrina Richmond, RN was nominated by a patient who was admitted to the hospital with severe chest pain. The patient was also dealing with a family emergency at the same time and was struck by Katrina's compassion and consideration towards them, other patients and even her co-workers.
The patient said Katrina "was so helpful and considerate. She really took the time to take care of me and all of her patients. She was compassionate and truly cared about all her patients and her job. She goes above and beyond her call of duty. She was never too busy to help a fellow worker or listen to a patient. She truly deserves an award."
