Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy uses the properties of water such as buoyancy, viscosity, temperature and hydrostatic pressure to achieve therapeutic results by reducing stress on the joints, improve circulation and muscle strength, and decreasing soft-tissue swelling, muscle spasms and pain. It is a unique therapeutic modality that provides patients the option of strengthening their body in different ways not possible on land in order to improve their quality of life. The unique properties of water can allow patients to participate in activities that otherwise may be difficult to tolerate. Treatments provided in an aquatic setting allow for easier transition to land based functional activities.
Northwest Health - La Porte’s aquatic therapy program is offered to both patients who require a skilled intervention for their recovery and community members through a wellness membership.
Patients need a referral from their physician and, upon evaluation by a skilled physical therapist, the program is administered under the guidance of a licensed therapist in the pool. Programs are designed and tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient administered during a 1 on 1 therapy session. Community members who are healthy and want to optimize their well-being can also benefit from such a program through a membership program and do not require a referral. A wellness specialist monitors the program after an initial assessment.
