What is a Sleep Study?
Your body goes through different phases during the different stages of sleep. Brain waves, eye movements, muscle tone, heart rate and breathing all change from stage to stage. By measuring these actions, specially trained doctors can tell where there are problems and what is causing the problem.
Sleep studies are done in sleep centers. These centers have hotel-like rooms where you will sleep overnight during your sleep study test. A technician will be there to help
you feel comfortable and at ease, and to monitor the test the entire night.
Before you go to sleep, the technician will set you up with several monitors. There are no needles, and there is no pain!
- Small metal discs called electrodes will be attached to your head and skin with tape or adhesive.
- Soft elastic belts are placed around your belly and chest. They measure chest movements and the strength and duration of inhaled and exhaled breaths.
- Wires attached to the sensors transmit the data to a computer in the next room. The wires are very thin and flexible and are bundled together so they don’t restrict movement, disrupt your sleep or cause other discomfort.
- A small sensor is placed under the nose to measure your breathing.
- A clip will be placed on one of your fingers to measure the oxygen level in your blood.
- Your sleep may be videotaped to make a record of any problems.
- Your study should be completed by 6 or 7 a.m. If you need to wake up at a certain time, please let your technician know so they can help accommodate your needs.
- None of the monitors hurt. All of them have been designed to be as comfortable as possible.
