Northwest Health - La Porte's pediatric rehabilitation services provide evaluation and rehabilitation, including speech, occupational and physical therapy, to improve the function and quality of life for children up to age 18 within a child-friendly environment.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists specialize in helping children master important life tasks at home, school and in the community. These skills include tasks such as dressing, self-feeding, writing and cutting. In order to master important activities of daily living, children must have regulated sensory systems to promote attention and self-regulation skills required to succeed in everyday life tasks. Occupational therapists help children strengthen and improve existing skills or compensate for loss of function.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy addresses children’s ability to successfully move and navigate through their environment. Physical therapists specialize in improving areas such as strength, balance, endurance, coordination and flexibility.
Speech Therapy
Speech therapists work with children who are having difficulty saying certain words, understanding language or safely eating and swallowing. These difficulties may arise due to motor dysfunction, hearing problems or other issues. Speech therapists specialize in strengthening oral muscles required for speaking, appropriate voice quality and swallowing. Additionally, speech therapists can assist families in the use of alternative communication devices (AACs) as needed.
