Your chances of having a stroke can increase if you have certain risk factors. Some risk factors of a stroke cannot be controlled, such as your age or family history. But you can take steps to lower your risk by changing lifestyle-related factors.
Uncontrollable risk factors
- Race: Hispanics and African-Americans are at greatest risk
- Age: Stroke happens more often in people over the age of 55
- Gender: Males are at slightly greater risk than females
- Genetics: Family history of stroke
